Elite Athlete Support

Athletes who will enhance the competitiveness of the 102km and 100 mile races, and the international profile of the event are invited to apply for travel assistance.  The assistance offered is in four tiers.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

– Ability to enhance the competitiveness of the event (based on their race CV).
– Social media following and use of social media.
– Being approachable and available to their fans in New Zealand.
– Racing team and sponsors (including sponsors of the Tarawera Ultra) and willingness of your sponsors to help promote the fact you are racing in this event.
– Country representation – to ensure we have an international field.
– If your sponsors are bringing a media crew (i.e photographer / video) to cover your performance and the event.
– Relationships with existing national and international media.

 

ATHLETE OBLIGATIONS 

– Sign up promptly and participate in the 102km or 100 mile event to the best of their abilities (do not race if injured or unwell- athlete health is of maximum importance).
– Be available for race social media – i.e. photos and interviews.
– Take part in the race week activities such as the elite athlete / media barbeque, boat trip, rogaine, hangi dinner, race welcome, seminar series and prizegiving.
– Post on your own social media channels that you have signed up for the event. Minimum of two posts (tier 1, 2, 3) or one post (tier 4) must be completed before the end of November in the year preceding the race. We can provide you with photos and videos to accompany your social media posts.


 

TIERS OF SUPPORT

TIER 1 | Travel & Accommodation

Selection Criteria
– Winners of the previous or recent editions of the Tarawera Ultramarathon.
– Current champions of major races globally – e.g. UTMB Mt Blanc, Western States Endurance Run, Comrades, Ultra Trail Australia, IAAF 100k World Championships.
– UTWT and the Tarawera team will make a final decision on the 1-4 athletes chosen for this tier.
– Applies to the 102km and 100 miler event only.

Includes
– Full return airfare from anywhere in the world.
– Free race week accommodation.
– Guaranteed and free race entry.


 

TIER 2 | Ultra Trail World Tour Elite Athlete Assistance

Selection Criteria
– The assistance offered and eligibility criteria and selection process are on the UTWT website.
– The Tarawera Ultra and UTWT will together choose the three supported athletes.
– Applies to the 102km event only.

Includes
-600 Euro airfare subsidy.
–  Guaranteed and free race entry.


 

TIER 3 | Travel Grants

Selection Criteria
– Winners or podium finishers of previous or recent editions of the Tarawera Ultra or winners of the Tarawera Trail Marathon & 50k.
– Podium place getters and winners of major trail ultra races globally, including all UTWT races.
– 10 athletes chosen annually.
– Applies to the 102km and 100 miler only.

Includes
– Up to $1000 NZ travel grant. Payable when you have booked your airfare.
–  Guaranteed and free race entry.

 


 

TIER 4 | Guaranteed & Free Entry

Can apply when competing in the 87 and 62km races as well as the 102k.

Selection Criteria
– Podium finishers of the previous edition of the Tarawera Ultra.
– Podium placegetters and winners of large trail ultra races globally.
– Winners of major endurance events – such as an Ironman or Coast to Coast.
– 20-30 athletes chosen annually.
– Applies to the 62, 87 and 102km only.

APPLICATION PROCESS


Please email sarah@taraweraultra.co.nz with your race CV. Please include in your email or race CV, information that is relevant to help us make a decision. Include the word “Elite Athlete Assistance” in your email subject line.

Applications must be received after 1 June and before 1 November. Race organisers will make some selections before this date and some afterwards. Tier 2 (UTWT selections) are typically made in December.

No athlete (Tier 1 to 4) can sign up to the race after the first week in January.
