Vibram, the renowned 70-year-old Italian footwear manufacturer is now the major sponsor for the Tarawera Ultramarathon.
Vibram have been creating headlines in New Zealand since 2008 when they introduced their Five Finger Shoes in to the New Zealand market. They have been enthusiastically adopted by off-road runners, but have begun to get noticed by water-sporters, yoga and fitness enthusiasts.
The Vibram Tarawera Ultra. is a 100km off road run from Rotorua to Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty. The race, now in its fourth year, attracts a strong international field of athletes willing to test themselves over the grueling course.
But the event is not about elite athletes says Race Director, Paul Charteris “it’s about ordinary people doing extraordinary things” Almost everyone who has completed this event, describes it as the most epic and extraordinary race they have competed in, for some they say the event has changed their lives.
The Vibram Tarawera Ultra. was a natural fit for us says Dylan Connor from Vibram New Zealand. We were looking for an extraordinary event to become part of. “We bought over athletes from Australia and USA and they raved about Rotorua and the event”, he says
Having a major brand like Vibram will certainly help the event grow says Mr. Charteris. “Vibram is the sort of brand that people take notice of – it will create a buzz in the running community that Vibram have come on board as a sponsor. This is the first major event that Vibram have sponsored in either New Zealand or Australia, he says.

The 4th annual Vibram Tarawera Ultramarathon Run and relays will be on Saturday 17 March, 2012. Described as an adventure, an endurance event, a 100km-long scenic buffet. The Vibram Tarawera Ultra features a 100, 85km or 60km solo run as well as relay options.
