The Course

There are three courses in the 2018 Tarawera Ultramarathon. They are 62, 87 and 102km long. All point to point. All three races end in Kawerau at the same finish line. The two longer distances start at the Redwoods, Rotorua while the 62km option begins at the Millar Road aid station at the start of the Western Okataina walkway.  The 87 and 102km courses have changed slightly from 2016 with a major realignment for the 62km event, the rationale is explained here.

In general, all three courses are low elevation, single tracks (trails) and wide trails through forests and narrow forestry roads. There are mainly gentle hills, short, steep hills and flat sections. There are few stairs. The major technical sections (roots, rocks and sharp hills) are the Eastern Okataina walkway and Northern Tarawera Track (roughly, Okataina to Humphries Bay aid station). This is considered a very runnable course.  Race results provide indicative times.

Course Markings: For the event, the course will be marked with red directional arrows on a white background ‘→’, and pink+orange flagging tape. There will also be reflective tape and glowsticks on night time sections. You need to pay attention, especially at night, to follow these course markings.

Change from 2016: New start location just past the Millar Road aid station. New 62km 2-person relay option. Relaxed cutoff times by about 2 minutes per km. Every runner now finishes in Kawerau. Generally a flatter and faster course, but also more scenic, more variety and less time spent on roads.
