Elite Athlete Support

Athletes who will enhance the competitiveness of the 100 Miler, 102km and 50km races, and the international profile of the event are invited to apply for travel assistance.  The assistance offered is in three tiers.

TIER 1

Selection Criteria

  • Winners of the previous or recent editions of the Tarawera Ultramarathon or
  • Current champions of major international ultra trail races – e.g. UTMB Mt Blanc, Western States Endurance Run, Comrades, Ultra Trail Australia, IAAF 100k World Championships or
  • UTWT Elite Athlete criteria stated here (102km athletes only) or
  • Top 5 ITRA Performance Index for New Zealand or Australia  

Support Provided

  • Up to 1000 Euro travel subsidy. Payable 30 days after competing in the event
  • Up to 5 nights free race week accommodation
  • Guaranteed and free race entry

 

TIER 2 

Selection Criteria

  • Winners or podium finishers of the previous or recent editions of the Tarawera Ultramarathon or
  • Winners or podium finishers of major international ultra trail races, including all UTWT races or
  • Winners of large domestic or international ultra trail races or
  • Winners of major endurance events – such as an IRONMAN or Coast to Coast
  • Top 10 ITRA Performance Index for New Zealand or Australia  

Support Provided

  • Up to NZD$1000 travel grant. Payable 30 days after competing in the event
  • Guaranteed and free race entry

 

TIER 3

Selection Criteria

  • Podium finishers of the previous edition of the Tarawera Ultramarathon or
  • Top 15 ITRA Performance Index for New Zealand or Australia

Support Provided

  • Guaranteed and free race entry

 

ELITE ATHLETE OBLIGATIONS

  • Make yourself available for any/all media requests – all TV/radio interviews, news release videos during race week (Wednesday 10th February 2020 until Sunday 14th February 2020) etc
  • Be available to take part in at least 2 race week activities such as the Race Director’s BBQ, Race welcome, Elite Athlete Q&A, prizegiving etc. A race week schedule will be released in January in which Elite’s will be allocated to different activities (Wednesday 10th February 2020 until Sunday 14th February 2020).
  • Post on your own social media channels that you have signed up and are training for the event. Minimum of two posts must be completed before the end of December in the year preceding the race. We can provide you with photos and videos to accompany your social media posts.
  • Minimum of two social posts made during race week in Rotorua (Wednesday 10th February 2020 until Sunday 14th February 2020)

 

APPLICATION PROCESS

Successful New Zealand based elite applicants will be notified no later than 14th August 2020 as a first round of applications – NZ based athletes can still apply up until 30th September 2020 and will be notified no later than 15th October 2020.

Successful international elites will be notified on a case by case basis dependent on New Zealand Immigration Laws.

All elite athlete applications close 30th September 2020. All successful applicants will be notified no later than 15th October 2020.

Athletes selected for Elite Athlete Assistance will have until end of year (31st December) to register for the event or forfeit their entry and support.
