Media Invitation | Tarawera Ultramarathon & 100 Miler
Kia Ora, Welcome
Coming in February 2012, the 12th annual Tarawera Ultramarathon will be unlike any running event New Zealand has witnessed.
It brings to life the second annual Tarawera 100 Mile Endurance Run. A 162km monster. The winner will smash this in 14 hours and the final elated runner will arrive home in 36 hours.
The Tarawera Ultra features 21, 50 and 102km distance. Part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour.
This is the largest ultramarathon run in New Zealand’s history. Nearly 2500 runners from 70+ countries will be competing.
Tarawera is one of the most competitive ultra running events in the world. In 2017 Jim Walmsley (USA) broke the men’s course record and claimed the ranking of #1 trail ultrarunner in the world. Camille Herron (USA) smashed the women’s record and won Comrades a few weeks later. In 2018 Kelly Wolf and Dylan Bowman (USA) won the 102k race with Adrian Paigent (FRA) and Sally McRae (USA) winning the inaugural 100 miler.
Elite runners will come from New Zealand and Australia, North and South America, Asia and Europe. It’s the global who’s-who of ultra trail.
Based in Rotorua New Zealand, elements of Maori culture are woven into this event – including a Powhiri welcome on Marae, a karakia and waiata at the race start and specially carved trophies.
The event is known globally for being so friendly to runners, crew, spectators and fans. Most media take part in the week from Wednesday to Thursday where our VIP programme allows you to access to many of the event’s superstars. By boats or on the back of a 4WD through the forests – we take you to where the action is.
A large team of journalists, photographers and videographers from New Zealand and abroad cover the event annually.
Rotorua is a destination with 4 million visitors each year. All media are invited to apply for assistance to help cover the event. We have a rich library of media assets and staff to help.
